Felix Sturm vs Ronald Hearns Fight on February 19, 2011 for WBA Super World middleweight champion. Felix Sturm (34-2-1, 14 KO’s) will have a great time in training hard to knock down the number #12 WBA ranked Ronald Hearns (26-1, 20 KO’s) this Saturday night at the Porsche Arena, in Stuffgart, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.
According to boxingnews24.com Sturm, 32, made a strange choice by picking out the 32-year-old Hearns rather than taking on higher ranked fighter such as David Lemieux, Matt Korobov, Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam or Gennady Golovkin. However, it’s not all surprising because Sturm has spent much of his time as a WBA champion fighting guys like Koji Sato, Khoren Gevor, Giovanni Lorenzo, Jamie Pittman Noe Gonzalez Alcoba instead of fighters with a better name and better ranking. It was hoped that Sturm would start facing better fighters after he left his old promotional team, but it looks like he’s not changing the way he’s being matched up.
Hearns has spent his entire seven year pro career facing B level fighters and doing a good job against them. When he did face a fringe junior middleweight contender in Harry Joe Yorgey, Hearns was easily beaten in a 9th round TKO. Hearns went back to fighting B level fighters after the Yorgey defeat and has won his last five bouts.
Why Sturm decided to pick out Hearns of all the possible opponents to fight is beyond me. But given how Stum has been matched in the past, this fight makes a lot of sense.
